ISO 45001 Requirements

The ISO 45001:2018 standard ensures the occupational health and safety of your employees and other interested parties while promoting a safe work environment.

An effective ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) implementation includes the following requirements:

  • Create awareness in the organisation of the ISO 45001:2018 OHSMS, establish a core team, and obtain a top management commitment to the implementation.
  • Develop the context of the organisation through the identification of internal and external issues, interested parties, needs and expectations of the interested parties, and the effect on the organisation if these needs and expectations are not effectively fulfilled. Define the scope of your occupational health and safety management system to clarify the boundaries of your ISO 45001:2018 implementation.
  • Define role, responsibility and authority for your OHSMS, identify competence required, and carry out competence evaluation.
  • Define risks to and opportunities for your OHSMS, considering the context of the organisation, products and services, processes, compliance obligations, etc.
  • Define your health and safety policy.
  • Carry our hazard and risk assessment and re-assessment. The focus is to identify potential risks and how to control or mitigate them.
  • Determine and establish operational controls for high risks and carry out emergency preparedness planning and emergency response activities.
  • Establish health and safety objectives, a plan to achieve objectives, and demonstrate regular tracking of these objectives.
  • Identify all compliance obligations, determine the status of those requirements, and develop an action plan for compliances which are not currently addressed. Regularly review them.
  • Determine training needs and maintain training records including training effectiveness evaluations.
  • Establish health and safety communication processes and document internal and external communication with various interested parties on the issues related to occupational health and safety.
  • Establish documented information control to manage health and safety documents and records. Manage documents of external origin as well.
  • Define a process for incident management and capture incidents and accidents for further investigation.
  • Capture non-conformities or deviations with corrections, root cause analysis, and corrective actions. Consider effectiveness evaluation of the corrective actions as well.
  • Manage your assets with effective preventive maintenance, breakdown maintenance, and a proper calibration records system.
  • Define and demonstrate control of work done by contractors and subcontractors to promote health and safety.
  • Establish health and safety process indicators to monitor, evaluate and improve OHSAS/HSMS performance.
  • Define OHSMS inspection process.
  • Plan and carry out an internal audit with audit plan, report, and audit observations.
  • Conduct management reviews and maintain OHSMS management review input, output and action plan records.
